Mokumokuren
Mokumokuren
Mokumokuren (目目連 – Eye Eye) is a type of yōkai depicted in the Konjaku Hyakki Shūi by Toriyama Sekien.
Sekiens desribes the creature as:
‘Spring mists leave no traces; gone like those who once lived in this abandoned house, now filled with eyes corner to corner. Perhaps it was once home to a go player?’
These first sentences paraphrase a well known poem by Sugawara no Fumitoki, the grandson of Sugawara no Michizane, which is included in the Wakan Rōeishū.
‘Peach and Plum Blossoms do not speak.
How many springs have come and gone?
Spring mists leave no trace.
Gone like those who once lived her.’1
