Hōkō
Hōkō
Hōkō (彭侯 – Penghou) is a type of yōkai depicted in the Konjaku Hyakki Shūi.
This creature is the spirit of a 1000 year old tree said to take the form of a black dog with no tail.
Sekien in his information here is quoting a 4th century Chinese book by the name of Soushen Ji which describes a creature using the same Kanji. The book states:
A big tree in China was cut down and inside a black dog was found. It was killed and eaten.1
