Amefuri Kozō
Amefuri Kozō (雨降小僧 – Rain Child) is a type of Yōkai depicted in the Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki by Toriyama Sekien.
Depicted with a hat formed of an umbrella, Sekien’s notes alongside the creature tell us that this creature was the ‘houseboy’ of the Rain kami Ushi.
This creature can also be found depicted in a pamphlet from 1792 illustrated by Utagawa Toyokuni, who was in his lifetime a pupil of Sekien’s disciple Utagawa Toyoharu. This pamphlet (kibiyōshi) was called the Gozonji no Bakemono (Monsters you Know) and focused upon this creature.1
