Funa yūrei
Funa yūrei
Funa yūrei (船幽霊 or 舟幽霊) is a type of Yurei depicted in the Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki by Toriyama Sekien.
The aimless spirits or ghosts are thought to represent hardship at sea. It is said that they will pull up alongside a boat and then deman ladles from the sailors. If given to the creatures, they would thne use them to bail water into your ship and cause it to sink.
Due to this sailors, would take ladles with their bottoms missing for good luck.1
