Hangonkō
Hangonkō
Hangonkō (返魂香 – Soul-returning Incense) is a type of yōkai depicted in the Konjaku Hyakki Shūi.
This particular creature is a type of fictious incense that can conjur images of the dead in its smoke.
The story related by Toriyama Sekien and this creature is that of the Chinese Emperor Wu of Han after the death of his consort Li.
He burned this particular insence, but all it did was serve to make his longing for her even deeper, leading him to write the following poem:
Is it thou?
Is it not?
I stand here gazing at a faint form,
why art though so slow to come to me?
This particular creature was included in a piece of artwork titled Hangonkō-no-zu.1
