Rokurokubi
Rokurokubi
The Rokurokubi (飛頭蛮) is a Yōkai depicted in the Gazu Hyakki Yagyō by Toriyama Sekien.
The Yōkai is depicted as a rather pampered woman. These creatures have rather elongated necks allowing their heads to move far away from their own bodies.
Sekien has chosen to use the Characters for ‘flying-head-barbarian’ for the name of this Yōkai, instead of the usual ‘potters-wheel-neck.’ The former relates to a different kind of Spirit capable of launching its head from its body.1
