Hōsōshi
Hōsōshi
Hōsōshi (方相氏 – Fangxiang Shi – An Exorcist) is a type of yōkai depicted in the Konjaku Hyakki Shūi by Toriyama Sekien.
This creatures role is detailed in the 2nd Century Chinese Rites of Zhou which states:
“The duty of Fangxiang Shi is to cover himself with bearskin, a mask having four eyes of gold, a black upper garment, and a lower vermillion garment; grasping at his halberd and brandishing a shield, he leads the hundred functionaries in the seasonal Nue (great exorcism)… to drive out pestilences.”
Additionally Sekien notes that in the Analects of Confucius is says:
“When the villagers were going through their oni-yarai ceremonies, he put on his court robes and stood on the eastern steps.”
Oni-yarai festivals were traditionally held in the Imperial Palace on New Years Eve, eventually shifting to the eve before the first day of Spring, which led to Setsubun.1
