Izu Ōshima

Izu Ōshima (伊豆大島) is a small island off the coast of Japan.

History

The man known as En no Ozunu was exilled here for three years after founding the religion of Shugendo. The Emperor at the time (Monmu) saw the new religion as a threat to his power and so had him exiled here.1
