Sakawori Palace

Staying at Sakawori Palace he composed a song at night time which went as follows:

Since I passed Tsukuba,
And Nihibari,
How many nights have I slept?

Man in charge of the lights responding to him saying:

Counting the days –
Of nights there are nine nights,
Of days there are ten days.

Finding a Forgotten Sword on a Tree

Near the end of his life he rediscovered a sword against a tree he had once left there and forgotten.

Oh! Thou single pine-tree!
Thou art right opposite
To Ohari –
Ah me- thou single pine-tree!
If thou wert a man,
Garments I would clothe thee with,
A sword I would gird on thee.1

Torishikaya

Torishikaya was one of the leaders of the Kumaso, leading one of the Kumaso Rebellions.

Yamato Takeru is sent to deal with the threat, bringing several men with him. When he arrives, he disguises himself as a woman, gaining a seat next to the Kumaso leader at a feast.

Once the leader becomes drunk, Yamato Takeru takes a out a hidden sword and stabs him in the breast, though he doesnt immediately die. Torishikaya asks who he is giving him his new name of Yamato Dake before he is finally killed.

Following this the remaining Kumaso are killed by the men he brought with him.1

The Jinnō Shōtōki gives the leader name of Takeruhito Konokamitori Ishikaya.2

Otohikogimi

Otohikogimi is said to have been an archer during the reign of Emperor Keikō living in Mino Province.

He is brought by Miyadohiko to Yamato Takeru when he asks who he should take with him to deal with the rebelling Kumaso.

When he arrives he brings with him Ishiura no Yokotachi, Tako no Inaki and Chichika no Inaki.1

    Yamato Takeru asks who he should take with him to deal with the rebelling tribe and an archer by the name of Otohikogimi is recommended.

    Miyadohiko is the man sent to retrieve him.1

    Missing the Capital

    The nihongi records that in his 17th year of reign he vsited the Koyu District in Hyuga visiting the moors of Nimo there. Missing the capital during the visit he composed a poem which went as follows:

    Oh! How sweet!
    From the quarter of my home,
    Clouds arising come hither!
    Yamato
    Is the most secluded of lands.
    Yamato
    Retired behind Mount Awogaki,
    Which encompasses it in its folds,
    Is beautiful.
    Let those whose lives are sound
    Stick (in their hair) by way of headdress
    Branches of the white evergreen oak
    Of Mount Heguri-
    (Fold within fold)
    This child.

    This poem is noted to have been split into three segments and sung by Yamato Takeru in the kojiki.1

    A Tall Trees Shade

    In the 7th month of the 17th year of his reign he constructed a Palace at Takaya.

    Here he saw a tree once so tall it covered the Hill of Kishima in shade in the morning and Mount Aso in the evening, and so he composed a song about it which goes as follows:

    The morning hoar-frost.
    August tree pole-bridge!
    The Lords of the Presence
    Pass over it-
    The august tree pole-bridge!1

    Ohoyenomiko

    Ohoyenomiko (大江王) was the son of Emperor Keikō and Kagurohime.

    The kojiki says his mother was the daughter of Sumeiroohonakatsuhiko, who was the great-grandson of Yamato Takeru. This would have to be an error in the records as it would mean the Emperor married his great-great-granddaughter.1
