The Greengrocer’s Daughter

The Greengrocer’s Daughter is a tale stemming from the Edo Period and which led to the superstition of a woman born in the year hinoe-uma is a great worry for the family.

The story goes that in 1681 there was a girl called Oshichi who fell in love with a man she met after they had taken refuge together. This refuge was sought after there had been a fire in the town.

After this, and wanting to see the man again, Oshichi thought that setting fires would allow her to see him again. And so so she began doing so.

At this time she was said to have been 16 years old and therefore had been born in 1666, the year of hinoe-uma.1
